ABSTRACT

This article focuses on a particular aspect of sustainable development, namely sustainable technology development. The relation between technology and sustainability is complex and paradoxical (Grubler, 1998). Apart from the advantage of creating economic growth and societal benefits, current use of technologies may cause severe environmental problems, such as pollution and depletion of resources. However, technologies may also lead to a more efficient use of resources, less stress on the environment, and cleaning of the environment. Thus, steering technological change towards sustainability—also referred to as “sustainable technology development” (Weaver et al., 2000)—is a fundamental part of governance for sustainable development.
