ABSTRACT

For a variety of social and political reasons, the 1980s saw an increased research on drugs and alcohol. Substance use and abuse among American minorities also received increased attention. Several earlier reviews have examined the subject of drug and alcohol use among minorities (Lex, 1987; Tucker, 1985; Long & Sherl, 1984). This paper grew out of an attempt by the present author, under the direction of the Special Populations Branch of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), to prepare a comprehensive annotated bibliography and evaluation of published materials on substance use among minorities. The purpose here is briefly to review the literature, present some examples from the annotated bibliography, and provide an analysis of the literature.
