ABSTRACT

The possible shortage of librarians due to the graying of the profession has been written about extensively. The potential for labor shortages in the profession is even greater in the area of subject specialties, particularly those that require backgrounds in disciplines with traditionally higher status, such as science, engineering, and technology. The same challenges in recruiting qualified science, engineering, and technology librarians are faced in the business subject specialty. Individuals with business degrees are simply not entering the profession in significant numbers. Respondents who were not satisfied with their applicant pool were asked to select from one to five reasons for their dissatisfaction. Whether rising demand would be answered by an increase in supply is not clear. What is evident from the results of this study is that a significant increase in demand could not be supported by the current supply of business information professionals.
