ABSTRACT

Most graduates in library science do not plan on careers in business librarianship. Few come to library science with any background or education in business. Traditionally, business is not a topic embraced by librarians. Philosophically, business is also very different from traditional librarianship. Librarians value information sharing. Business patrons place great worth in keeping information to themselves— this information is their competitive edge. Librarians who want to become proficient in business usually need to look for opportunities to learn about business. Business and its related topics such as careers, investing, real estate, management, marketing, and accounting are always in demand in a public library. During good economic times, real estate investing, and wealth management are popular topics. The goal of the best library schools is to train graduates who will be able to enter into a wide array of positions in a variety of settings. The single most important trait for librarians is inquisitiveness.
