ABSTRACT

The literature about beginning a career in corporate librarianship is plentiful, and many resources are found in the form of handbooks or guidebooks. Individuals entering or enrolled in library school who are interested in this area of librarianship may consider some options for tailoring their education to get the maximum benefit. A number of library schools offer targeted curriculums for the areas of special librarianship and knowledge management that are excellent ways to prepare for corporate librarianship. Independent or individual study courses can also offer people invaluable experience before graduation. It is common for information professionals who are in transition to supplement their education through continuing education and professional development. Many corporate libraries have informational outreach programs intended to keep the community up-to-date on the business landscape. Corporate librarians share many characteristics with other types of librarians. The discussion of skills and knowledge necessary to be a corporate librarian is often focused on the general business environment.
