ABSTRACT

A mentor has first-hand knowledge and experience in a career path that the player wants to pursue. The mentor role assumes that the mentor has experience, knowledge, and contacts that can help a particular individual achieve a specific goal. Mentees have strengths and weaknesses that need to be addressed within the context of the individual demands of their libraries. Mentors are expected to meet with their mentees on a regular basis. A monthly meeting for two hours is the normal recommendation although the mentoring pair can select the best meeting schedule for their needs. There are many examples of good mentoring programs, and most share some common characteristics. Mentors are also encouraged to meet with the mentee’s supervisor to discuss progress, but confidentiality is always stressed. The nonacademic world has a number of programs that could provide useful framework or ideas for implementation in the academic world.
