ABSTRACT

Chronic exposure to stress in the workplace can lead to emotional, social, and mental exhaustion. Patrons become queries instead of human beings. The easy, directional queries become annoyances. “Job burnout is a psychological syndrome that involves a prolonged response to stressors in the workplace. Specifically, it involves the chronic strain that results from an incongruence, or misfit, between the worker and the job”. Exhaustion is a key component of burnout, but there are additional components that characterize it as a syndrome distinctive from other disorders. Burnout is rooted in the relationship between the worker and the job and work environment. Research has found significant consequences of burnout for individuals, families and employers. The Maslach Burnout Inventory is a survey developed to measure the incidence of burnout in individuals. The survey offers statements relative to the three dimensions of burnout. Some library work functions lack stimulation and challenge.
