ABSTRACT

Individuals beginning a career in business librarianship may at first be overwhelmed by the breadth of knowledge required to function adequately as a business librarian. Maintaining a working knowledge of finance, accounting, marketing, real estate, and tax law, combined with information from a variety of state, federal, and international agencies, challenges even the most seasoned business librarian. Conducting library instruction sessions requires understanding the course materials and requirements and is greatly enhanced by learning faculty research interests. Public service includes gaining an understanding of the institution. It is essential to know the mission of the school and the vision of the dean. Articles discussing demographics, business education, and core competencies for business librarianship can be found in journals as diverse as Library Mosaics and One-Person Library. In addition to interacting with business faculty on the library committee, one former colleague worked with business faculty on the business school’s curriculum committee.
