ABSTRACT

Conventional wisdom says that leadership is an innate skill that can be cultivated and developed, and that leaders can be distinct from administrators or managers. Leadership development opportunities abound. The Institute prepares librarians to be leaders that can enable their organizations to be well positioned for transformation. The faculty considers attendance by each participant at all classes essential for the program to make a maximum contribution to both the individual and the group. The teachers were skilled in integrating the technical elements of the classroom into their teaching. The instructors’ effective use of the built-in sound system and microphones allowed them to leave the center podium and move easily around the room, reducing the perception of distance between them and their students, and serving to keep everyone engaged. Maureen Sullivan continues to serve on the Institute’s faculty, teaching on the subject of leadership strategies for library leaders.
