ABSTRACT

According to Library Journal’s 2007 Placement and Salary article, “What’s an MLIS Worth?,” almost 37% of the 2006 graduates that responded to the survey indicated that they remained with their current employer while getting their degree. Distance education programs and Web-based classes make that scenario more feasible than ever. As a result, it is natural for persons who really enjoy their work to desire to move into a professional position with the same library upon completing the library and information science (LIS) degree. However, with a distance education program combined with either internship opportunities or at least part-time staff work in a library, persons can gain the experience that so often is listed in the “desired qualifications” section of the job advertisement. In this chapter, the author has shared his working experience in public libraries, an elementary school library, and an academic library.
