ABSTRACT

This article seeks to explore the glory years of Indian hockey. Now almost forgotten in the wake of the enormity of cricket’s stellar popularity in India, it was hockey and not cricket that had provided India the most conspicuous sporting success on the world stage in the first half of the 20th century. The article delves into the history of those years when India reigned as the undisputed champions of the game winning six straight Olympic gold medals. The article explores the history of that meteoric success bringing to life the victories, personalities and controversies of those ‘golden years’.
