ABSTRACT

Classical remains were still visible in the medieval period. The Renaissance fostered a renewed interest in the Classical past and literature. Visitors to Rome and Italy observed the major monuments and some desired to remove key sculptures to display in their homes. One of the earliest English collectors was Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel (1585–1646). He visited Italy in 1612 and acquired a number of sculptures that were sent back to England to be displayed in a special gallery at Arundel House in London.
