ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book shows irregularities in age-sex statistics, Bayesian approach to analyze child mortality, health in sub-Saharan Africa, fertility patterns, nuptiality patterns, population distribution, migration, and urbanization. The book explores different academic and research institutions in sub-Saharan Africa, participated in the rigorous scientific activities that facilitated the production. The fact that there are demographic changes and commonalities in this subcontinent, similar characteristics and extremes in the region. The book adopts both technical and descriptive approaches in its presentation. The various demographic events were subjected to serious technical analysis to provide information on the levels and trends in demographic process, while the descriptive approach was used to provide explanation of the observed trends and their impact on sub-Saharan African demography and development.
