ABSTRACT

This article will describe a Special Project (Clakeley, 1988) which the author, a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA), de veloped on a Pediatric Rehabilitation Unit. The project resulted in new learning that led to enhancement of patient treatment through adaptation of battery operated toys so that severely handicapped children could activate them. This learning was used to plan and conduct a hands-on workshop to teach other professionals how to adapt the toys. Since then, the assistant’s consultation has been sought to advise other professionals on selection and adaptation of toys.
