ABSTRACT
It is a supreme irony that an institution supported by such a significant body of literature can legitimately be described as “one of America’s least examined, least understood institutions” but so it is with the liberal arts college.1 The irony can be explained by a number of myths surrounding and supporting it. One can say “sup porting” because, as in other contexts, myths can be essential to the success of the institution.
