ABSTRACT
Psychological needs are as important to growth as physical needs, and this is arguably more evident in sport and exercise contexts than in most others. Unless both are satisfi ed, growth may be impaired (Deci, 2002; Maslow 1987). Deci pointed out that innate psychological needs are necessary conditions for psychological growth, integrity, and well-being; and that satisfaction of these basic needs facilitates autonomous motivation. It is therefore important to be able to recognize when a particular need is not being met. For example, when an athlete does not have a sense of security, anxiety may result and interfere with
performance and relationships. If athletes do not view themselves as independent and in charge of themselves (need for autonomy), when faced with diffi cult challenges they may experience a sense of powerlessness and feel like victims who lack adequate resources. When athletes have no self-worth or a sense of meaning or purpose in their lives, they may be vulnerable to depression.
