ABSTRACT

Some preliminary remarks should be made before entering into the body of this chapter. The investigation presented here focuses on the built environment as an expression of a multicultural and multifactor urban demand by a transforming society (Sassen, 1991). ‘Population groups, differentiated by criteria of ability, age, gender, class, ethnicity, sexual preference and religion, have different claims on the city for a full life and, in particular, on the built environment. How can planners contrive to make positive responses to these claims?’ (Sandercock, 2000).
