ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book intends to serve as an overview of selected directions, trends, possibilities, limitations, enhancements, design principles and ongoing projects for integrated library and information systems. It is divided into three related sections: Philosophies, Technical Design Considerations, and Example Scenarios. Philosophies discusses many complexities and considerations in this new collection development scenario. Technical Design Considerations includes more technical analyses of the digital library infrastructure components. It is author's hope that this section makes STM librarians more aware of the vocabulary and technical issues involved in creating a seamlessly integrated system. Example Scenarios includes two short reviews of existing digital library systems. The first article, by Patrick McGlamery, Map and Geographic Information Center, University of Connecticut, addresses the development of a state-wide GIS mapping clearinghouse. The second article describes some of the alternative search and delivery systems created to supplement the United States Patent and Trademark Office system.
