ABSTRACT

According to Lucretius, the clinamen is the spontaneous swerving motion of atoms as they fall which causes them to collide. Without the clinamen, he writes, "nature would never have created anything." The clinamen effect propagates gradual change through a system. It can refer to a slippage in original meaning of terms, the amendment of constitutions, or a spatial condition which determines form. The clinamen's plastic application requires a medium that is malleable and responsive in the translation of language to geometry. The architectural intervention thus proposes a building which slowly evolves as an animate skin continuously changing over time. This evolution moves the building through the various Olympic sports, gradually transforming its structure and surface detail to accommodate them. The pinched dementia is the moment of inversion when inertia vectors are pulled through the middle and reverse direction.
