ABSTRACT

Islamic patterns are based on highly complex geometrical and numerical logics which introduce metaphysical rules or cycles into a physical world. The resultant geometry reveals a new set of characters, which, when subject to operations such as mirrored augmentation, rotational expansion, and progressive multiplication, lead to a variety of novel outputs. The architecture's structural units act as an analog to the skeleton, which possesses an endless amount of morphological variety based on the same basic rules of growth. Similarly, the master plan for the Olympic site evolves from the idea of an adaptable structural framework. The constantly changing urban condition necessitates a logic for transformation over time during the events of the games. In all these explorations surface structure is a manifestation of underlying processes which determine performance and describe the basic rules for change and variety within a whole.
