ABSTRACT

Passive resistance is based on performative input and output: as an autonomous system that passively inherits logic from its user and environment, it performs positively through the resistance of materiality. Investigations into prefab structures, biological membranes, and mesh organization inform the capacity of the module. In an aggregated state, the system stores knowledge of its history and acts upon past experiences. The module itself travels from a focal origin into space and returns onto itself, creating a closed loop suggestive of a knot. The filigree of aggregated knots provides a level playing field, where at specific moments the introduction of massive bulging profiles creates a higher degree of order. The inhabitable space has the ability to reactively morph in response to the user, site, and environmental conditions: in an extended state the skin stretches flat; compression forces the skin into gentle billows with varying degrees of storage.
