ABSTRACT

The whole is the result of a complex and collaborative distribution of the many. Similar logics of collaboration are embedded within the materiality of these design methodologies and the effects they generate, which seem to have lives of their own. Stable images of singularity dissolve into fluctuating images of multiplicity at both individual and collective scales and through particular forms of interface. The material constraints are as influential in determining form as the designer, thereby blurring the distinction between author and object. Rather, the work in this volume contains a kind of potency, its significance emerging from a space of projection. It is the reader who brings meaning to the material. Like Internet ports or hyperlinks through which one accesses unforeseen structures of potential, the material is interactive, extending the process of invention and imagination to the viewer, and engaging him not as a passive recipient but as an active co-author.
