ABSTRACT

The deviant system of communication employed by honeybees provides the central idea for this project. When a scout returns to the hive, it dances to communicate the location of the food source to the recruits. However, error is inherent in this system of communication, with five to ten percent of the recruits failing to find the food source. A deviant trajectory applied to the membrane—one pinch of a single unit—causes the entire membrane system to transform its attributes, including the aperture size. Distortion, transgression, and replication of the sidewalks on the Central Park and Trump Tower blocks of Columbus Circle magnify this concept of normative redundancy. Repetition and distortion create openings within the sidewalks that allow space for street performers and vendors. As the aperture of the membrane tightens on the ground, the membrane grows, forming deviant canopies above.
