ABSTRACT

When considering how best to help children experiencing learning difficulties and showing inappropriate behaviour, a tension that has always been present is the extent to which the focus of thinking and support should be on requiring the child to make adjustments or whether it should be more on adjusting the context in which the child finds him/her self. This study by Simon Knight addresses the implementation of an individual management plan (IMP) in order to support the effective transition of a child, at risk of exclusion, from a mainstream school to a special school. It considers the existence of a tension between the ideals of an inclusive education system and the practicalities of working with children with learning difficulties within a mainstream context.
