ABSTRACT

Gitika Partington works as an organiser of music projects based at Camden School for Girls, London. This is a flexible advisory role which involves her in the musical curriculum of three primaries, a secondary and a special school, and also in the local community. In this chapter she focuses on school assemblies as a key time for including everyone in singing. The project illustrates, amongst other things, the way in which performance can be very motivating and the phrase ‘I did not see a child or adult who was not engaged all day’ is testimony to the potential inclusivity of singing. There are echoes here, of course, of the BBC television documentary series featuring the Gareth Malone who does much, wherever he goes, to break down the resistance of boys and men to participation in choirs. The Camden singing project is a further reminder that singing in a choir can be a very powerful personal and educational experience.
