ABSTRACT

The ‘sustainable city’, as we have come to know it from the 1990s scientific, policy and activist literature, gets energy from renewable sources and has no air or water pollution. Material flows are managed through global supply chains and ‘cradle to cradle’ industrial ecology. People move on foot, by bicycle, or share cars. They eat organic food, preferably from regional producers and community-supported agriculture. Every day in professional domains from urban planning, housing and transportation to public policy and education, we work to make this ideal a reality.
