ABSTRACT
Like all disciplines with a root in science, town planning, urban design and architecture have been dominated by cultures that valued a particular form of order: linear, rigid, prescriptive and structured by top-down hierarchies and detailed classification. Typologies, regulations and zoning plans were developed to catalogue, order and control both the social and physical environment that constitute human settlement.
