ABSTRACT

Education hubs are an important new development in cross-border education. They represent a new third generation of cross-border education activities where mobility, critical mass, and collaboration between international/local universities, students, research institutes and private industry are the key. The purpose of this chapter is to look at student mobility, human resource development and knowledge production through the lens of the relatively new phenomenon of education hubs. There is no single model for an international education hub as local conditions, priorities and rationales vary from country to country and from hub to hub; but, common challenges and questions exist. Are education hubs more rhetoric than reality? Are they a passing fad, a branding exercise or a serious initiative worthy of substantial investment? Are education hubs sustainable?
