ABSTRACT

Computers and the associated science informatics are the two fastest developing areas of technology that have delivered a sea change in the everyday lives of billions of people. It is impossible to imagine our very existence – and possibly our world – without computers. ‘Computer’ has become a very familiar – even overused – word, and it seems that we have lost the meaning of it. It all started more than a century ago with the need to design a faster and more sophisticated calculator that could also perform logical operations. The reality nowadays could not be further away as computers have penetrated every aspect of modern life. Critical operations such as electrical production and distribution, transport systems, house and industrial water supplies, intensive care in hospitals down to our everyday shopping are not feasible without computers. As they affected all walks of life and society as a whole, they inevitably affected all aspects of sport as well, from training practices and preparation of athletes for competitions to big events organization and broadcasting. Sport could only become an integral part of society with mass participation and acceptance as a cultural phenomenon, both athletes’ achievements and popularity were only possible due to the speedy and accurate information transfer, making sport an integral part of society with mass participation and acceptance as a cultural phenomenon.
