ABSTRACT

The aim of this final chapter is to bring together the different ideas that have emerged from the preceding chapters. The authors all have different backgrounds, and across disciplines one word can take on very different meanings. Therefore, we first need to consider definitions. After addressing the meanings of “reparation” and “healing”, the chapter discusses factors that can help or hinder victims’ healing. This book follows the approach of therapeutic jurisprudence and aims to identify ways that justice contributes to healing. First, we identify victims’ needs and the order in which they should be met in order to optimize healing. Second, we identify principles of justice that contribute to the restoration of justice for victims. Finally, these two concepts are considered together as we reflect on how reparation systems can be therapeutic.
