ABSTRACT

Most people would agree that there are clear areas of overlap between coaching and therapy in terms of basic skills, processes, psychological roots and the significance of the client–practitioner relationship. However, coaching and therapy have different histories and to some extent a different purpose, so it was perhaps inevitable that in the last few years arguments about to what degree they are the same and to what degree they are different have intensified. For some people the extent to which they are similar adds to a case in favour of integrating these two activities. For others it flags up a need for further clarity around definitions and a demarcation line between them.
