ABSTRACT

Over recent years there has been increasing international debate concerning the health and well-being of society. This includes attempts to understand more clearly how the qualities of the environment and access to landscapes, both natural and designed, influence health, with particular focus on physical and mental well-being. This area of enquiry includes issues regarding how we perceive and react to the landscape and the ways in which access to different landscapes can enrich people’s lives, with particular attention on the role of nature, urban green spaces and how people access them. Well-being is an area of enquiry that crosses disciplinary boundaries, has multiple dimensions and is discussed using various terminologies; how we might use these variables to understand the relationship between the landscape, human experience and well-being is the focus of this book.
