ABSTRACT

The ten member states of the Europe an Community cover a land area of some 1.67 × 106 km2. This area is politically, socially and economically diverse. Politically, each state retains independence at a national level, and within each state considerable regional autonomy survives. Socially and economically, the Community encompasses both heavily industrialised and urbanised regions (mainly in the north), and rural, agricultural areas (which dominate the south).
