ABSTRACT

India shares with other countries a growing concern over environmental deterioration. As science and technology evolve, the pace of resource exploitation grows greater and deeper causing the so-called ‘Environment-Development Crisis’. Scientists and citizens alike are worried about it. Governments are also patently aware of the problem. Ultimately, it is a question of survival. But without environmental studies and analysis, and the formulation and implementation of suitable environmental management policies, the crisis cannot be averted. Time is of the essence. This calls in the first place for an appraisal of environmental attitudes and policies.
