ABSTRACT

The potential online danger to children is as acute now as it has ever been. Although online predators, cyberbullying and ‘sexting’ have entered the lexicon, children have an unprecedented and often unsupervised opportunity of access to the online world. This chapter considers how technological advances in ICT, mobile communications and social networking impacts on children and the people who work with them, and how practice has to adapt in order to ensure that children are safeguarded. By the end of this chapter you will:

N have a clear appreciation of the types of potential online danger; N understand that when we allow younger children to use online and mobile

technology, we as practitioners have a duty to safeguard them from potential online danger;

N be able to construct an appropriate online safeguarding policy for your early years setting.
