ABSTRACT

Erasing behavior on multiple-choice test answer sheets has been increasingly used to screen for test irregularities or unusual item response patterns, particularly to check for test proctors, teachers, or others involved with tests that inappropriately affect student responses or perhaps change students’ answers to test items. For example, analysis of erasures was one source of evidence in recent cheating scandals in Atlanta (Severson, 2011) and Pennsylvania (Winerip, 2011).
