ABSTRACT

In 1967, Mr. Roy Jenkins and Mr. Anthony Wedgwood Benn, then respectively Chancellor of the Exchequer and Minister of Technology, appointed a Committee of Inquiry to investigate the pricing of certain Government contracts with Bristol Siddeley Engines Ltd. (BSE). The contracts related to the period 1959 to 1965 and involved the overhaul and repair of aero-engines, particularly Sapphires and Vipers, which had previously been supplied to the Government by BSE. The Committee, known henceforth as the Wilson Committee after its Chairman, Sir Roy Wilson, Q.C., reported on 21st February 1968. 1
