ABSTRACT

This chapter will examine the role of creativities in higher music education from the perspective of the role that creativity plays in cognition. In recognizing that both the act of learning and that of participating in musical activity involve the active synthesis of new knowledge, it will argue that music must ‘happen’ for an individual in order for learning to take place. It is therefore the role of teaching to create the conditions in which music and learning can happen. This requires creativity from teachers in order to overcome the paradox that their students must already be able to participate in a community of practice in order to gain the experiences that will enable them to learn and hence join that community.
