Lord Kylsant was the chairman of the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company, and Mr. Morland was a partner in one of the largest and most respected firms of accountants in the world. Lord Kylsant was a man who, until the moment of his trial, was universally acclaimed, not only as a great shipping magnate, but as one of the most respected figures in the country. He had been made a peer in 1923. He was a Grand Cross of the Order of St. Michael and St. George. He was the Lord-Lieutenant of the County of Haverford West. He had been president of the Chamber of Shipping of the United Kingdom and of the Chamber of Commerce of the British Empire. In fact, his whole career had been one of personal triumph and achievement.
