ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an in-depth exploration of tourism within the Seychelles by way of reviewing the tourism product, the tourist markets, tourism development and tourism strategy. This is followed by an account of key tourism initiatives being undertaken in the Seychelles to respond to the uncertainties brought about by the changing external factors of climate change and economic crisis. These initiatives are examined for their efficacy in developing a green economy. The transition to a green economy offers an opportunity for the Seychelles to respond to the dual challenges of sustainability and the impacts of climate change. The Seychelles provides a good example of the challenges and opportunities faced by small island developing states in moving towards sustainable tourism as part of their economic development. The Seychelles government has had to implement radical structural economic reforms and this has included a number of green tourism initiatives.
