ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the psychology of health behaviour needs to be inherently embedded within a wider case-conceptualisation process. It focuses on the pragmatic aspects of the clinical assessment and formulation process within a Specialist Weight Management context. The chapter illustrates how these clinical tools can facilitate more theoretically-informed pragmatic approaches to influencing health behaviours. To explore the potential of case formulation within health and exercise behaviour change settings, it provides an overview of case formulation and demonstrates how it is currently being used to enhance practice within a Specialist Weight Management Service (SWMS). The chapter also provides a further description of the specific CBT work for SA. It focuses on the process of applying psychological theory to practice within the context of health and exercise-related behaviour change. The chapter discusses that there is a considerable need for the psychology of health behaviour to be routinely and inherently embedded within a wider case-formulation process.
