ABSTRACT

Abrasion is the scraping away by friction, when separate entities come in contact with each other. In this material world people use abrasion to make things appear or function more to their liking. People prevent abrasion by lubricants if they do not want its effect. This chapter explores the role of liberal learning in fostering the art of self-governance and explores the associational life of the student and its role in the ecology of learning. It explains about associational life and learning to understand the role of abrasion. Associational life begins as an infant begins to acquire skills, beliefs, and habits of relationship. Socialization has been extensively studied, so it is only necessary to remind ourselves that this is a process of social learning. If liberal education's task is to develop engaged and effective citizens capable of self-governance, the teaching must be both engaged and effective.
