ABSTRACT

Depreciation theory is one of the most discussed and disputed topics in accounting. Without a doubt, the best single source of historical information on accounting in The Accountant, a weekly periodical that was first published in England at the end of 1874 and which continues into the present. It is apparent, however, that few of those who have an interest in accounting history have had the opportunity to examine the early issues of this publication which contain a wealth of information in the form of articles, reprinted lectures, debates, editorials, and other materials on diverse topics in accounting, business and economics. The Accountant is an interesting and valuable source of information on the history of accounting. This method has been given other names such as the annuity method, compound interest method and economic depreciation. It has been discussed by numerous writers, especially in the last two decades.
