ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on agriculture and urban development, a concern primarily relating to the land demand emanating from urban areas, it is important to stress the scope of the broader urbanization-agriculture interaction thrust. A major research area in agricultural geography also has strong links with several other sub-fields of geography such as urban geography and resources management as well as with a number of other disciplines and professions such as land use planning, agricultural economics, land economics and rural sociology. The scope of research in this field can be defined most easily in relation to the broad process by which urban development interacts with agriculture. This can be reduced essentially to the impact that urban development has on agriculture. The agriculture-urban development field has attracted an enormous amount of attention in the geographic literature and related fields since the late 1960s.
