ABSTRACT

In the current World Trade Organization (WTO) world, it is assumed that global trade regulation is highly dependent on science. The establishment of a scientific basis is considered indispensable for decision-making and conflict resolution. This perspective also resonates in the following quote from Kaliarnta, Hage and Roeser (this volume, p. 243):

Depending on science is the only way to go. Certainly in a WTO world, science [and] health effects are the only issueswhere you canfind abaseline for some kind of common agreement, because we know our culture is different from culture in the Philippines. The only way to come to a common agreement is to use science.
