ABSTRACT
In 1977–8, I carried out policy-oriented anthropological research on the situation of peasant Sinhalese women in the North-Central Province in Sri Lanka. The general aim was ‘to describe and analyse the situation of women under changing social and economic conditions, and to give recommendations for a development policy aimed at the needs of women and their participation in society’ (Postel and Schrijvers 1980: i).
