ABSTRACT
Archaeology is about the description and understanding of qualitative, structural change in human systems of the past, and real understanding is usually related to scientific knowledge. However, when these two ideas are brought together, they raise some unresolved, fundamental issues. What is the science of change? What is the science of evolution? And what is therefore the relationship of science to ourselves?
