ABSTRACT

This branch of the syllabus deals with the exploration of the material world: the world of solids, liquids and gases. To the scientist, copper and talcum powder, lemonade and shampoo, air and natural gas are all materials. (There might be confusion here where pupils have heard the word ‘materials’ applied only to cloth and fabrics.) Pupils’ investigation of these will later lead to the idea of matter being made of small particles: atoms and molecules. The ideas of physical and chemical changes are explored, and the possibility of creating new materials from naturally occurring ones.
