ABSTRACT

IN 1825 the first missionary to start a school arrived at Alexandria. The period from then until 1863 coincides with the reigns of the first three rulers of modern Egypt: Mohammed Ali, Abbas I, and Said. The year 1863 marks the end of Said's rule, the decline of British missionary educational activity, and the accession of the francophile Ismail to the Egyptian throne. Consequently, after 1863 French missionary educational activity developed considerably. American missionary work began in 1863.
