ABSTRACT

IN Cyprus the conflict between Church and State was quite different from those discussed elsewhere in this book. In the other cases the Church was established by missionaries some time after the colonization of the country. In Cyprus the Greek Orthodox Church had been established in A.D. 45 1 and this long life had given it not only a rich tradition but a strong determination to fight for its independence and a great faith in the soundness of its dogmas and tenets. Consequently the conflict took place between an ancient institution which had the support of the vast majority of the population and a foreign government which ruled Cyprus as a colony for some eighty-two years.
